2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs Model Y

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has come onto the market as a direct challenger to Tesla's Model Y. The Mach-E lives up to its Mustang heritage in terms of performance, while evolving the Mustang aesthetic into a futuristic, sleek style.

Performance

The Mach-E comes in at a base price of $56,400, cheaper than the Model Y's base price of $61,190. Even at this lower price point, Ford's all-electric Mustang actually boasts higher performance than the Model Y.

The Mach-E speeds along on two permanent-magnet synchronous AC motors at a combined 346 horsepower and 428 lbs/tq. While the Model Y's combination of a single synchronous AC motor and one induction AC motor may have a little more horsepower than the Mach-E, the Mach-E can coast on its higher-capacity 88.0 kWh battery pack. The Model Y, however, only has an 81.0 kWh battery pack.

What this means is that the Mach-E can take you up to 250 miles on the interstate at 75 mph, while the Model Y would stop short at 230 miles according to Car and Driver's tests of the two vehicles. That 250-mile trip will run quieter, too, as Car and Driver's tests also revealed the Mach-E operates on the highway at 68 decibels compared to 70 in the Model Y.

When it's time to stop and charge, the Mach-E can charge at a rate of up to 150 kW, though exact times will vary based on the charger being used.

Interior Features

Moving to the interior, the Mach-E features two different screens: one portrait-oriented, 15.5-inch screen in the center console as well as a smaller screen behind the steering wheel.

The Model Y has only one central screen, limiting the driver's ability to take in information. Additionally, the Mach-E offers a total cargo capacity of 59.7 cu. ft. behind the front seats which, according to Car and Driver, allows the storage of a 20th suitcase over the 19 the Model Y can fit.

With lower pricing, better mileage, and overall better design for interior systems and noise, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E easily displaces the Tesla Model Y as the electric vehicle of the year. The Mach-E holds the award for North American Utility Vehicle of the Year as well as the Car and Driver 2021 EV of the Year, and it's an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2021.
